Content of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
The rights guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights can be sub-categorized as follows:
Right to Protection of Personal Integrity
Right to life; prohibition of slavery and forced labour; right to liberty and security of person; right to respect for one's private life; right to legal capacity; prohibition of being imprisoned because of debts; prohibition of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment; right to be treated humanely in confinement.
Rights to Freedom
Right to relocation and to establish oneself; prohibition of arbitrary deportation of persons with foreign citizenships; Freedom of though, conscience and religion; freedom of expression and of information; freedom of assembly; freedom of association and free unionization.
Laws of Procedure
Equal rights before courts and tribunals; entitlement to a fair and public hearing by a competent, independent and impartial tribunal; specific rights of the accused person during the penal proceedings; prohibition of ex post facto law.
Political Rights
Right to participate directly or indirectly in the shaping of public affairs and to general, equal and secret voting; entitlement to equal access to public office.
Prohibition of Discrimination and Minority Rights
Entitlement to all civil and political rights defined Pact II; equality before law; equality of men and women; right of ethnic, religious or language minorities to their own culture, religion and language.
