EURO 08 and supporters’ fundamental rights
From 7 to 29 June 2008, Switzerland and Austria host the European Championships 2008 (EURO 08). In all four host Swiss cities - Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich - the national and cantonal authorities have created a security concept, which prohibits the entering of certain restricted areas, air surveillance by military planes and drones, express tribunals, or temporary bunker detention centres.
According to the Democratic Lawyers of Switzerland and the association Grundrechte.ch (or "fundamentalrights.ch"), some repressive and disproportionate security measures could be used against those innocent of any wrong-doing. They edited a flyer informing football fans how best to behave and what their fundamental rights are. The association Grundrechte.ch will monitor the event and has establisehed an E-mail address for information about any violation of fundamental rights.
