Protocol No. 6 to the ECHR

Protocol No. 6 to the ECHR dates from 28 April 1983 and deals with the abolition of the death penalty, which is banned at least in times of peace. In times of war or immediate danger of war, the death penalty can be provided for by law, if a respective legal provision has been transmitted to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. For more information, see Protocol No. 13 that abolishes the penalty of death also in times of war. Protocol No. 6 entered into force on 1 March 1985 and has been ratified by all CoE member states except Russia (as at 4 July 2019; current count).
