Goals and Tasks of the ILO
Alleviating Labour and Living Conditions
The essential goals of the ILO are detailed in its constitution. The preamble states that world peace can only exist sustainably if it is built on social equality and fairness. Equal working conditions can threaten world peace. Therefore, the living and labour conditions of all people must be improved. Unemployment must be prevented, there must be a maximum duration of working hours on any given day, children, youths and women must be protected and provisions must be taken for the elderly and disabled persons. Other purpose of these norms is purely pragmatic: globally accepted social standards shall prevent individual participants in international trade from creating advantages by reducing employee rights.
