Call for a Swiss Institution for Human Rights
At the occasion of the International Day for Human Rights on December 10th, 2006, a support association calls the Swiss government – both the Federal Council and the Parliament - to take action in creating a Swiss Institution for Human Rights.
Despite the international agreements signed by Switzerland, such as the Action Program of the International Human Rights Conference in Vienna (1993), the country still has not taken concrete measures. The creation of such an institution would put Switzerland in similar position to several European countries such as Germany, Norway, Denmark and Ireland, who all implemented recommendations adopted by the UN General Assembly in Paris in 1993.
On 6th June 2006, promoters of an independent Swiss human rights institution have joined forces, setting up a body with a number of heavyweights from the political and non-governmental scene. Goal of the Association for the Promotion of a Swiss Institution for Human Rights is to lobby the government, who works on a project since already four years.
